Bears kill man, injure two in attacks in Hokkaido, Iwate

SAPPORO (Kyodo) One person died in an apparent attack by a bear in Hokkaido, while another two people were injured in bear attacks in Iwate Prefecture on Saturday, police said.

In the town of Mukawa, Hokkaido, a 70-year-old man was found dead in a forest. Neighbors discovered the body with his chest badly clawed around 2:30 p.m., local police said.

His wife had asked the neighbors to search for the man, who left home in the morning to collect edible wild plants, when he did not return, the police said.

In Iwate Prefecture, a 62-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man were injured in separate bear attacks.

The woman, Kyoko Kudo, was attacked by two bears in a forest in the city of Ninohe around 9:45 a.m. and sustained serious injuries to her face. She was collecting wild vegetables with three family members, local police said.

In an attack in the same prefecture around 5:30 a.m., a bear slightly scratched the face of Tadashi Sasamori, while he was fishing in a river in the village of Takizawa.
