The Tokyo and Bucharest chambers of commerce agreed to strengthen economic cooperation Wednesday, with Romanian President Traian Basescu attending a ceremony in Tokyo to mark the signing of the agreement.

Bucharest Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Sorin Dimitriu and Tadashi Okamura, chairman of the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry, signed the agreement at the Imperial Hotel in Chiyoda Ward.

At the Romania Economic Forum that followed the signing, Basescu gave a keynote speech highlighting his country’s economy and calling for direct investment in the Eastern European country.

“My purpose in visiting Japan at this time is to build an amicable bilateral relationship,” Basescu said through a translator.

He said Romania is particularly interested in investment by Japanese companies in his nation’s energy and food industries.
