Chinese held for altering fingerprints

A Chinese woman has been arrested on suspicion of illegally entering Japan by falsifying her fingerprints to deceive the biometric recognition system at Kansai International Airport in Osaka, police said Monday.

Lin Rong, 27, is believed to have undergone surgery to swap the skin on two fingertips on her left hand to her right hand, and vice versa, the police said. She allegedly told investigators she spent about ¥1.3 million to have the surgery performed in China.

She is suspected of using a different person’s passport to pass through immigration control in December 2008, police said.

She was indicted last month for submitting a false marriage registration stating she had married a Japanese citizen. This prompted the police to probe further and discover she had been deported for overstaying her visa in 2007.
