HELSINKI (AP) Nokia Corp. is axing 220 jobs at research and development units in Japan as the world’s largest mobile phone maker continues to cut costs.
Last week it announced 330 job cuts in Finland and Denmark at its R&D operations, which globally employ 17,000.
Nokia reported in October its first quarterly loss since it became the world’s biggest mobile phone maker in 1998. The net loss in July through September was 559 million euro (about ¥74 billion) — down from a profit of more than 1 billion euro in 2008 — and sales fell 20 percent to 9.8 billion euro.
