Toshiba to build EV battery plant

Kyodo News

Toshiba Corp. said Wednesday it will build a new factory in Niigata Prefecture to mass-produce rechargeable batteries targeted mainly for use in electric vehicles from around spring 2011.

Toshiba said the move to create its second factory for the Super Charge ion Battery (SCiB) comes in anticipation of future demand for the batteries amid the expected growth of use of electric vehicles.

The electronics maker will invest about ¥25 billion in the construction and production facility of the 33,000-sq.-meter factory, whose construction in the city of Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture, is scheduled to begin next April and be completed by October 2010.

Toshiba has been mass-producing the batteries at its factory in Saku, Nagano Prefecture, since 2008 and sees the SCiB business as a potential revenue source, eyeing sales of ¥200 billion in fiscal 2015.
