Famed violinist Toshiya Eto has died at the age of 80, his family said Tuesday. The date and cause of death were not immediately released.

After graduating from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1948, Eto studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. While attending the conservatory, he gave a recital at Carnegie Hall in 1951.

He also devoted himself to educating younger players, including world-famous Akiko Suwanai and Mariko Senju.
