A Tokyo hospital said Tuesday it was debating whether to help a couple with HIV to have a child by in vitro fertilization.

The process has been done in Japan when one person has HIV but never when both people have the virus.

The couple, in their 30s and who live in the Kanto region, asked their doctor, Hideji Hanabusa, at Ogikubo Hospital in Suginami Ward to perform the vitro fertilization to prevent their child from being infected with HIV. The hospital's ethics panel is debating whether he can proceed.
