‘Ultraman’ TV director dead at 69

Akio Jissoji, best-known for directing the popular 1960s TV series “Ultraman” and “Ultra Seven,” died of stomach cancer Wednesday. He was 69.

After making his first feature film in 1969, Jissoji quit Tokyo Broadcasting System Inc., where he made the super-hero series, to set up his own production company.

The Tokyo native’s movies include “Teito Monogatari” (“Doomed Metropolis”) in 1988 and “Mujo” (“This Transient Life”), which won the Grand Prix at the Locarno Film Festival in 1970.

He is survived by his wife, actress Chisako Hara.
