Nikai lauds Japan-Brazil TV accord

Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Toshihiro Nikai on Friday welcomed a memorandum of understanding between Japan and Brazil in which the South American nation expressed a “strong wish” to introduce Japanese digital television standards.

“If Japanese standards take root in Brazil, our digital technology could be widely adopted in other Latin American nations,” Nikai told a press conference, referring to the ISDB-T format, which is only used in Japan.

Foreign Minister Taro Aso and his Brazilian counterpart Celso Amorim signed the memorandum Thursday in Tokyo. In it, Japan pledged to offer cooperation to establish a Brazilian digital television system based on ISDB-T standards if the country decides to adopt the Japanese format.
