The Sapporo District Court on Monday sentenced a former police inspector of the Hokkaido Prefectural Police to nine years in prison and fined him 1.6 million yen on several charges, including drug and gun possession.

Yoshiaki Inaba, 49, was found guilty of possessing a gun and 93 grams of stimulants with intent to sell. The firearm and drugs were found concealed in his Sapporo apartment in July; he was arrested the same month.

Prosecutors had demanded a 12-year prison term and a fine of 2 million yen.

Inaba's defense had argued that his actions were backed by the organized involvement of the Hokkaido police force. Presiding Judge Katsumasa Koike did not touch on that point in the ruling, however.
