Ancient hilltop shrine, venison highlight trip to Kaibara
The path to the top of the hill in Kaibara town is shaded by maple trees, still fiery in their demise so late in the season. The smooth stone steps turn once, twice, before petering out just before a large torii gate. Beyond this wooden marker lies the Kaibara Hachimangu Shrine, the oldest shrine in the Tamba region, an area of low peaks and fertile valleys in the northern part of Hyogo Prefecture. From behind the main hall, the low reverberation of a bell echoes across the valley. When the last thrum dies away, the only remaining sound is the rustle of the wind through the precinct of this 1,000-year-old shrine.

Walking in the steps of samurai
There is no embellished castle tower to keep watch over Sasayama, a city ringed by the mountains of central HyogoPrefecture. Only thick stone walls mark the site where an early 17th-century fortress stood. Even in those days, the castle keep was a relatively unimpressive construction when compared to the edifices of major powerhouses like Osaka and Kumamoto castles.

Sightseeing off the beaten track in rural Kyoto
Mere minutes after the Sagano Scenic Railway train leaves its terminus in the popular suburb of Arashiyama just outside Kyoto, civilization abruptly falls away. Behind us lies a metropolis of at least a million people; out the windows, the only signs of life are a few Japanese macaques cavorting among the trees on the hillside.
