Postalco keeps your money safe
Stationery and accessory brand Postalco has launched its 2014 spring/summer line and, as always, there’s so much to love. But let’s focus on two new stand-out items.
Lost money while traveling? That’s what happened to Postalco founder Mike Abelson during a trip in Europe, but he learned his lesson and it inspired him to add a flat Travel Pouch to the new lineup. Made of a thin, but durable nylon, the pouch is inconspicuous and hangs off your belt to be tucked discreetly into your trousers or skirt. It’s available in dark blue or dark green.
If you need something to hang the pouch off, then you could get Postalco’s new Reversible Post Buckle Belt. Made of oiled leather, which means it’ll age well, the main feature of this belt is that it neatly hides the buckle holes, thanks to the clasp that adjusts on the reverse side. You can also flip it over for a different color, and it comes in either black/dark brown or brown/tan.
The Travel Pouch is priced at ¥9,000, and the Reversible Post Buckle Belt, available in two sizes, is ¥23,000. As with all Postalco items, you can order them online, but do yourself a favor and visit the Postalco shop in Shibuya.
Toward a remote-controlled home
Balmuda received a lot of attention this year thanks to its current lineup of innovative electronic products — a lot of that attention, admittedly, came from this column. If you’re also a fan, you’ll be happy to hear that the company has created something to support your devices.
The UniAuto app — available on iOS, with an Android release planned for later this year — allows you to remotely control the Balmuda Rain humidifer and SmartHeater from anywhere. You can check on the status of these devices, as well as operate them while on the go, and it’s available for free from the iTunes App Store.
Sitting on a good idea
If your home has a traditional-style Japanese room, then it’s very likely that you have a few zabuton (Japanese floor cushions) lying around. H Concept’s +d brand — more specifically, designer Satoshi Umeno — proposes a modern twist on these traditional items by not only offering them in a variety of pop-color combinations (blue/gray, green/yellow and pink/brown), but also by using rubber-like and felt-like materials, which are more in keeping with current furniture trends. This means they’re water repellent and stain resistant, and they’re great not only for the floor, but as chair cushions as well.
Mixing the traditional with contemporary design is not new, but when the results really elevate an original product, it’s always worth checking out. The zabutons come in two sizes, at ¥2,625 and ¥3,465, and can be ordered from the H Concept online store.
Wrinkles you’ll like
Never one to shy away from experimenting with production techniques to produce something original, Nendo is at it again, this time with the Semi-Wrinkle Washi lamp. Nendo has partnered up with Taniguchi Aoya Washi, a traditional washi (Japanese paper) maker in Tottori Prefecture that is also the only maker of washi in seamless 3-D shapes.
The prolific designer has put a few wrinkles in Taniguchi Aoya Washi’s oeuvre, literally, by adding konnyaku (devil’s tongue) in the production process for the top part of the lamp shades. The result is a lovely uneven wrinkled texture.
The Semi-Wrinkle Washi is available exclusively at Seibu stores, and is priced between ¥21,000 and ¥37,800.
Taking to the bottle
As you’ve probably guessed, the Bottled lamp looks like a bottle. But its shape is more than just aesthetic — the casing creates an elegant glow to the lighting produced, which can be adjusted with four dimming settings. It’s cordless, so it can be used anywhere, and it can stay lit for up to 100 hours on a single charge, which makes it particularly ideal for outdoor parties. When charging, you can still use it on its stand.
