Hiro Sone, an award-wining Japanese chef based in California, will be preparing a special dinner Oct. 9 and 10 at his California restaurant, Silverado, in Ginza, Tokyo.

Sone is the owner-chef of the Terra restaurant, which opened in 1988 in California’s Napa Valley, one of the world’s great wine-producing regions. Since then, he has received many awards, including Best Chef of California from the James Beard Foundation Awards, often called the “Oscar of the food world,” in 2003.

In 2005 Sone opened Ame, a restaurant at the St. Regis Hotel in San Francisco, which was chosen as the Best New Restaurant in the 2007 Zagat Guide. Both restaurants earned stars in the Michelin Guide 2008.

Sone will create a special Californian dinner course that makes the most of Japanese ingredients, French and Italian cooking styles, and the latest trends in Californian cuisine.

The restaurant has an extensive wine list that regularly includes nearly 100 kinds of California wine, and specially selected California wines to complement the meals will be recommended.

The dinner course starts from 7 p.m. and costs ¥12,000 per person.

Chinese favorites mark reopening

After undergoing renovations, the Turandot Yusenkyo Chinese restaurant at the Pan Pacific Yokohama Bay Hotel Tokyu will celebrate its Oct. 1 reopening with three special courses throughout the month.

Renovated under the direction of washi (Japanese paper) artist Eriko Horiki, the classic Japanese-style interior has a modern feel but creates a relaxing atmosphere.

From Oct. 1 to 10, traditional Chinese dishes and shark-fin delicacies are featured. Shark fins from Kesen-numa in Miyagi Prefecture, known as a top-quality source of the delicacy, will be carefully cooked over a week and served in a variety of styles, including as a stir-fry, with rice or noodles and in its most familiar setting as shark-fin soup.

Between Oct. 11 and 20, diners will be able to enjoy the latest menus from Wakiya Gramercy Park Hotel restaurant in New York. The restaurant, which Yuji Wakiya, the hotel’s grand chef for Chinese cuisine, opened in the city last year, is earning a reputation for its new and healthy style of Chinese food, which uses lots of organic vegetables.

From Oct. 21 to 31, Shanghai crabs will be the featured dish, including whole steamed crabs.

Each course costs ¥15,000 per person and is available between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. for lunch, and between 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. for dinner.

Sake festival in Hiroshima

The very popular Saijo sake festival in Hiroshima will be held this year on the weekend of Oct. 11 and 12.

The festival attracts some 200,000 people every year, and 900 different kinds of sake can be tasted for an admission charge of ¥1,600 (snacks and soft drinks are extra).

Besides sampling many varieties of sake, you can tour several local sake breweries, enjoy live music and dance performances, and participate in a tea ceremony.

The sake tasting will run from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 11) and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 12) in Saijo’s Central Park.
