Japan Times kicks off 55th charity drive

The Japan Times has begun its 55th yearend charity drive to raise money for The Japan Times Readers' Fund, which helps needy people in Asia. The campaign runs through Dec. 31.

Last year, readers contributed ¥926,131 to the fund. Thank you for your generosity.

Of the 2009 total, ¥175,227 was presented to the Kyoto-based group Nippon International Cooperation for Community Development to provide literacy enhancement and vocational computer training to impoverished women living in Herat Province, Afghanistan.

Four other groups — the Japan International Volunteer Center, AMATAK (House of Cambodia), PAG-ASA Group Japan and the Friendly Asian Home — each received ¥175,226. The Japan Association for Refugees was given ¥50,000.

The Japan International Volunteer Center helped villagers in Savannakhet Province, central Laos, establish sustainable agriculture, freshwater fisheries and goatherding. AMATAK, led by the Rev. Fumio Goto of the Kichijoji Catholic Church in Tokyo, constructed the 16th elementary school the group has built in Cambodia. PAG-ASA Group Japan provided financial assistance to some 40 impoverished elementary and high school students in Muntinlupe, near Manila.

FAH mainly used the money to provide translation and interpretation services so immigration and other government officials would take prompt and appropriate actions for non-Japanese Asians in Japan suffering infectious and other serious diseases.

The Japan Association for Refugees provided assistance to people from other parts of Asia waiting to be officially recognized as refugees in Japan.

We once again ask readers to contribute to this fund. Donations can be made via PayPal, bank transfer or check.
