'Ishuretsuo: The Image of Ezo'

Hakyo Kakizaki's 1790 series of paintings "Ishuretsuzo," which portrays the influential figures of Hokkaido's Ainu people, was praised by the Emperor and feudal lords of its time and has since been copied and replicated many times.

Usually housed at Museum of Fine Arts and Archeology in Besancon, France, the paintings now come to Chiba Prefecture's National Museum of Japanese History to be the centerpiece of an exhibition that brings together different versions of "Ishuretsuzo" from around the world. Other related objects and documents will also be on display.
