These minimalist monochrome works by the abstract expressionist Barnett Newman have been lent to the Miho Museum by the National Gallery of Art, Washington. Though oceans apart, the two museums were both designed by the architect I.M. Pei, a connection that helped bring this exhibition to fruition.
The show takes its title from "The Stations of the Cross: Lema Sabachthani," a 1966 exhibition of Newman's works at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and it features the 15 paintings that make up the eponymous series. These works took the artist eight years to complete and, despite their abstract nature, were part inspired by the traditional formula of religious paintings.
