After five years of construction, the Kyoto National Museum is ready to open a new wing, the Heisei Chishinkan, on Sept. 13 2014. To celebrate, the museum is bringing together 400 historical works related to Kyoto, including around 50 National Treasures and 110 Important Cultural Properties.
The first section, Portraiture, showcases large paintings of shoguns from the Kamakura Period (1185-1333 ) to the Muromachi Period (1392-1573), such as those of Minamoto no Yoritomo, Taira no Shigemori, Emperor Toba and Cloistered Emperor Hanazono. The second section, Momoyama: The Age of Hideyoshi, features works related to Toyotomi Hideyoshi and include portraits as well as his samurai jinbaori jacket; Sept. 13-Nov. 16.
