‘The Killing of a Chinese Bookie’

by Giovanni Fazio

Director: John Cassavetes Language: English

John Cassavetes is often regarded as the godfather of American indie filmmaking. His stuff can often be as frustrating as it is rewarding, but when it works, it soars. “Faces”, “Shadows”, “A Woman Under the Influence”, “Opening Night” and “The Killing of a Chinese Bookie” will all be in your rental shop this week, and while it’s a toss-up, I’d start with with Ben Gazzara and his elegiac portrait of a lowlife strip club owner in “The Killing of a Chinese Bookie” (1976).
