‘Kuroyuri Danchi’ (The Complex)

by Mark Schilling

Special To The Japan Times

Director: Hideo Nakata

Language: Japanese (subtitled in English)

This 2013 shocker by Hideo Nakata stars former AKB48 singer Atsuko Maeda as a young woman who moves into a creepy old danchi (public housing complex) with her family and discovers that her elderly next-door neighbor has met a lonely end. The ghostly scares that follow are mainly from the J-horror catalog of cliches, though Maeda’s traumatized character is more than the sum of her screams. The new U.K. DVD from Koch Media is English-subbed but devoid of extras.
