‘Fune wo Amu (The Great Passage)’

by Mark Schilling

Director: Yuya Ishii

Language: Japanese (subtitled in English)

Yuya Ishii’s drama about a nerdy word maven (Ryuhei Matsuda) who spends decades editing a dictionary may not seem based on the most cinematic of topics, but Matsuda’s solid (if low-key) performance, as well as Ishii’s sensitive direction have helped the film garner much domestic kudos, as well as Japan’s nomination for the best foreign-language film Oscar. Edko Films’ Hong Kong-release DVD has English subs, as well as a theatrical trailer and photo gallery, and is on Yesasia.com.
