Targeting children, but interesting enough for adults, this fictitious illustrated journal is written by "Dan," an American boy on a four-month homestay with a family in Japan. His entries consist of typical culture shock and observations — from Japanese shoe etiquette and family bath routines to food and daily life.

My Awesome Japan Adventure, Rebecca Otowa, TUTTLE

The writing is easy-to-read, but at times Dan's observations are unrealistic (very few children would eat unfamiliar food with such enthusiasm). Despite some minimal flaws, the story and illustrations will hold a child's interest with comparisons to Japanese and American culture written in a voice they can easily identify with.
