Now in its 56th year, the World Press Photo Contest has expanded its categories to include sports and portraiture to reflect those growing trends in photojournalism. The competition attracted more than 5,000 applicants, and the winning photos are currently on world tour, now making its stop in Tokyo.

Many of the winning images focus on conflicts in the Middle East, in particular in Palestine and Syria. The overall winning photo, taken by Paul Hansen, documents a distressing scene in which two Palestinian children, killed in an Israeli bombing, are carried by members of a mourning crowd to their burial ceremony.

Diverse in nature, the exhibition highlights the most significant news events of the past year; till Aug. 4.
