Imari porcelain, produced in Arita, Saga Prefecture, has attracted collectors across the world for centuries and is particularly well-known for its sometsuke blue-and-white designs.
This exhibition brings together a number of outstanding examples of large Edo Period (1603-1867) Imari plates, which were used by the aristocracy for entertaining at parties. The Edo food culture that gave rise to such plates, which range from 30 cm to 60 cm in diameter, is also explored along with the manner in which sometsuke reflected the simple yet expressive Edo sensibilities; June 8- Aug. 25.
