This is part five of the Nagasaki Prefecture Museum's "Art of Nagasaki" series of exhibitions, and it introduces the work of Western-style painter Sadami Yokote (1899-1931).
Yokote moved to Paris during the 1920s after seeing the work of Yuzo Saeki, another Japanese artist who was already living there. His works showed similarities in color and composition to Saeki and were exhibited in the city's respected salons. Yokote's work, again like Saeki's, also reflected his experience as a foreigner, often showing signs of loneliness and a sense of despair. This is the first retrospective of Yokote's work, presenting 70 items, including sketches, memoirs and letters from the collection of the Nagasaki Prefectural Museum of Art; May 16-July 21.
