With summer just around the corner, the spirit of dancing will radiate in the heart of Tokyo as The 6th Foreigner's Traditional Japanese Dance Exhibition takes place June 25.
Supported by the Agency of Cultural Affairs, this exhibition has been held annually since 2006 for foreign residents in Japan. Participants take part in learning and experiencing traditional Japanese dance, and organizers hope it will expand interest in local culture among the international community. Preparations began last October, starting with an orientation and dance lessons every month up until the competition.
Traditional Japanese dancing comprises various elements of theatrical and imperial representation of art through folk music and body movements. Some routines will implement colorful umbrellas and Japanese fans to accentuate hand gestures and form a spectacular sight. This year the highlight of the exhibition will be the musical performance of the "Ayame" and "Mari to Tonosama," which are two well-known buyō (dance) pieces. A contest will take place to choose the best dancer during the exhibition, and this year the contestants, who are currently studying at Japanese universities, will be representing 21 nationalities. The winner of last year's dance exhibition was Kuo Ting-yin from Taiwan.
