In a rare coalescence of musical tastes, percussionist Hideki Ikegami will delight both fans of classical music and percussion with "Melodias Marimba."
Accordianist Mie Miki and pianist Mako Okamoto will be supporting Ikegami's marimba, something akin to the grand piano of xylophones. The performance will include songs by Ennio Morricone, Astor Piasola and a Japanese classic titled "Tasogare no Bigin" by Naomi Chiaki.
Ikegami entered the music department of Osaka Kyoiku University as a classic percussionist. While studying there, he also attended the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris and Conservatoire de Paris. It was in France that he won second prize in the 46th ARD International Music Competition in 1997.
Ikegami uses percussion as a lead instrument and marimba to play classical music. The Melodias Marimba lineup will be a chance to show audiences what he can do by bringing what is usually a supporting instrument to the foreground.
