A contemplative look at the life of Wu Quingyuan, a famed go player who moved to Japan from China as a 14-year-old in the 1920s. Based on Wu's autobiography, the film explores the man's inner state as he rose to become Japan's top player of the chesslike board game that originated in ancient China. He suffered from the mental stress of go tournaments and joined several religious cults. Tian Zhuangzhuang depicts Wu's stoic and lonely pursuit of the essence of go with respect but not much explanation of the game itself.
