This year's Asia Orchestra Week will be held from Oct. 2-4 as part of the National Arts Festival sponsored by the governmental Agency for Cultural Affairs.
South Korea's flagship KBS Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Chang Yun Sung, will feature 19-year-old Kim Sun Wook for Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1. In 2006 Kim was the first Asian to win the Leeds International Piano Competition. (Oct. 2 at Tokyo Opera City and Oct. 3 at the Symphony Hall in Osaka.)
The Kunming Symphony Orchestra, a rising orchestra from the landlocked Chinese province of Yunnan, will play Mao Yuan and Liu Tieshan's "Dance of the Yao People" and others. (Oct. 3, Tokyo only.)
The India-Sri Lanka Goodwill Orchestra, made up of musicians from the Delhi Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka, will feature Harsha Makalanda, a pianist whose output includes jazz, pop, music direction and film music, and Ravi Bandhu Vidyapathy, who will play the traditional Geta Beraya drums of Sri Lanka.
