Hilary Swank plays the real-life teacher Erin Gruwell, who struggled to win the trust of her gangster students. Fresh-out-of-university, Erin comes to an Los Angeles high school in which students have racially segregated themselves by choice: blacks, Latinos and Asians. The passionate and idealistic Erin attempts to revive the students’ will to study by asking each of them to keep a diary. Swank’s performance and the depictions of each student’s struggle turns an otherwise formulaic story into something moving and true.
