Blindsight

by Mizuho Aoki

Director: Lucy Walker
Language: English and Tibetan

The chill air of the Himalayas is almost tangible in a documentary about six blind Tibetan teenagers who climb the 7,000-meter Mount Lhapka Ri north of Mount Everest. Led by Erik Weihenmayer — the first blind man to conquest Everest — and his team, the six students plus two European faculty from their school set out for the peak. As they climb, the youngsters suffer from altitude sickness, causing heated arguments among the adults that reveal different views among the mountaineers and the educators on notions of success. While the adults question why they are climbing the mountain, the six Tibetan children find a new — and great — joy in the experience.
