Japan winger Ryo Miyaichi will undergo season-ending surgery on his right ankle, Premier League club Wigan Athletic said Thursday on its official website.
Miyaichi, who was borrowed from Arsenal on a year loan, suffered the injury in Wigan's F.A. Cup quarterfinal 3-0 win over Everton last Saturday.
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said, "It's a real shame that Ryo has suffered this injury after working so hard to regain his fitness following a setback earlier in the season."
"His professionalism and work ethic on a daily basis have always been superb and we'll do everything we can to help him make a speedy recovery."
The Japan international has endured a difficult time since arriving on loan from Arsenal in the summer.
He sustained an ankle injury having only just returned from a spell out with a groin strain, and he had not played for the first team since featuring in a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool on Nov. 17.
The 20-year-old Miyaichi only made seven appearances for Wigan, with just one start, in his injury-hit year.
