Tokyo Electric Power Co. said it has finished repairing the damaged silt fence set up in front of reactors 5 and 6 at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant to stop radioactive materials escaping into the Pacific.
Tepco said Friday it has taken seawater samples beyond the fence in the area where water from the two reactors is discharged, but found no significant changes in contamination levels.
"There have been no effects from the damage to the silt fence," Tepco claimed in a press statement the same day.
The fence, erected within an artificial bay in front of the wrecked power station, was found Thursday morning to have been damaged by bad weather.
The fence is meant to keep soil and sand from clogging the seawater intakes for reactors 5 and 6, which were not damaged by the March 2011 disasters.
The barrier is also designed to stop radioactive materials escaping from crippled reactors 1 through 4, where a second silt fence has been installed.
