Paintings were originally created as representations of the physical world. However, as technologies such as photography were developed, the role of painting changed to that of portraying concepts that went beyond physical representation. The Realism movement of the late 19th century giving way to the symbolist movement that followed illustrates this transition.
This exhibition explores the works of Odilon Redon, one of the leading figures of the French Symbolist movement and is organized chronologically with earlier works showing the influences that impacted the artist's later works; April 20-June 23.
