Hubert Robert was a French 18th-century painter and garden designer, known for his romantic depictions of old and decaying landscapes that were fashionable in his time. His talent for portraying dilapidated subjects and conceptualizing similar gardens that involved man-made waterfalls and grottoes, earned him the nickname Robert des ruines (Robert of the Ruins).
The National Museum of Western Art celebrates Robert's work with a display of 130 oil paintings, drawings, prints and other ephemera from Robert's career, along with some works created by his teachers and colleagues, till May 20.
