AMAGASAKI, Hyogo Pref. – West Japan Railway Co.’s catastrophic train derailment April 25 cost the city of Amagasaki about 50 million yen in personnel costs and other expenses, it was learned Wednesday.
City officials said they would ask JR West to shoulder any portion of that sum deemed above and beyond the cost of regular operations expected of a municipality in such a disaster.
The Amagasaki Municipal Government set up a special disaster headquarters the day the accident took place and mobilized some 2,200 city employees to help with search and rescue operations, snarled traffic and other problems caused by the derailment. The headquarters stayed open until early May.
