A 36-year-old Japanese woman who fell ill on a Cathay Pacific Airways flight from Hong Kong to Johannesburg died Friday in Sri Lanka, where the flight was diverted, according to Sri Lankan authorities.

The woman, identified by coroner Basil Tissera as Mihoko Goto, was pronounced dead at Negombo base hospital close to Colombo airport.

A judicial medical officer attributed Goto’s death to a pulmonary thrombo-embolism, or a blood clot in the lung.

Edward Higgs, Cathay Pacific’s country manager in Sri Lanka, told Kyodo News that Goto was found unconscious and critically ill around 3 a.m. on flight CX759, and efforts by cabin crew to resuscitate her failed.
