Trio seek A-bomb patient status

Three people filed a lawsuit Monday at the Kumamoto District Court, demanding that the government recognize them as atomic-bomb disease patients and pay them 3 million yen each.

This brings the total number of plaintiffs in this category nationwide to 157. The plaintiffs have filed suits at 11 district courts, including Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Kagoshima, seeking government recognition as A-bomb disease patients.

The three new plaintiffs were in Hiroshima or Nagasaki at the time of the 1945 atomic bombings. They later developed lung cancer and other diseases.

They demanded that the government recognize them as A-bomb disease patients last year. The government rejected their application earlier this year, stating that it could not confirm their diseases had been caused by radiation, according to their complaint.
