Thai ambassador calls Japan ties good

New Thai Ambassador to Japan Suvidhya Simaskul on Wednesday stressed the importance and strength of bilateral ties.

Simaskul, who arrived in Japan in July, said bilateral economic relations are “the best.”

Thailand has been the biggest destination for Japanese overseas Simaskul investment in Southeast Asia, with 40 percent of foreign direct investment in Thailand coming from Japan, he said.

He said his government will continue to negotiate a free-trade agreement with the Japanese government.

Thailand joined the International Banking Facility of the IMF many years ago, and Japanese who invest in Thailand can send their profits back home, he said.

“You cannot do that in China,” he said.

“In the crunch of 1997, no Japanese companies left Thailand,” Simaskul said. “In fact, all the Japanese companies that had invested there increased investment.”
