A light plane crashed Monday afternoon on a mountain near the town of Nandan on Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture, killing the two people on board, police said.

Hyogo Prefectural Police were alerted by a shrine on 608-meter Mount Yuzuruha that a plane had crashed at around 4:30 p.m.

One of the victims was identified as Tateo Okamura, 56, of Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture. Police believe the other victim was Okamura’s wife, Miyoko.

According to the Osaka Regional Civil Aviation Bureau, the private plane, a Socata TB10, took off from Nanki Shirahama Airport in Wakayama Prefecture at around 4 p.m. and was scheduled to land at Takamatsu Airport at around 5 p.m.

Fog had been reported in the Nandan area with visibility of less than 50 meters at the time, police said.

A priest at the shrine said he heard the plane crash soon after the sound of the engine stopped.
