Man gets 20 years for Hawaii killing

A 34-year-old Japanese man was sentenced Friday to 20 years in prison for killing a woman who operated a surf shop with a partner in Honolulu.

A jury convicted Daiki Iba of manslaughter in the killing of Michiko Sakata, 44, a Japanese-American, rather than of second-degree murder, for which he had been indicted, because it concluded he “recklessly” killed Sakata, a spokesman of the U.S. District Attorney’s Office in Honolulu said.

A hearing for parole and minimum term will not be scheduled for another six to 18 months, the spokesman said.

According to court documents, Iba attacked Sakata in her surf shop at around 1:30 p.m. April 22, 2003.
