Student held over school torching

A 20-year-old student at the Nagoya Institute of Technology was arrested Monday on suspicion of setting fire to the school, police said.

The suspect was identified as Hiroyuki Asano, a junior in the university’s engineering department.

Asano was quoted as telling investigators he started the blaze in an attempt to have the annual university festival — which was held from Thursday to Sunday — postponed.

According to investigators, Asano stole into the university grounds sometime between 2:30 a.m. and 3 a.m. June 10, poured some gasoline that he had brought in a plastic bottle on the floor of the gym and set it alight.

The gym floor was damaged in the incident.

Asano was a member of the festival’s executive committee. He told investigators that his concern over the event’s faulty preparations prompted him to seek its postponement or cancellation.
