SYDNEY – A career diplomat who specializes in Asia will become Australia’s next ambassador to Japan, Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer said Thursday.
Murray McLean, 57, is currently a deputy secretary at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
In November, he will replace John McCarthy, who has been ambassador to Japan since July 2001.
McLean has held posts in Beijing, Hong Kong and Washington, and was Australia’s high commissioner to Singapore from 1997 to 2001, and its consul general in Shanghai from 1987 to 1992.
He has worked as first assistant secretary in the North Asia Division and assistant secretary in the East Asia Branch.
