Crashed log truck was overloaded

Kyodo

A transport truck that overturned on an overpass and indirectly caused the partial derailment of a train in Kainan, Wakayama Prefecture, was overloaded with logs at the time of the incident, investigative sources said Friday.

The truck had been loaded with 50 logs weighing some 45 tons — almost double its maximum loading capacity of 23 tons — when it overturned Wednesday, scattering its cargo onto the railway tracks below, they said.

Wakayama Prefectural Police on Friday searched the offices of Haraike Unso, the Wakayama-based transport services firm that owns the truck.

Authorities might indict 42-year-old driver Hiroshi Domae on charges of professional negligence leading to injuries and violation of the Road Traffic Law, the sources said.
