A U.S. Marine stationed in Okinawa Prefecture was arrested Saturday in Ginowan for assaulting a Japanese man who had been driving while drunk, the Okinawa Prefectural Police said Sunday.

Pvt. Eric Hoffman, a 21-year-old Marine stationed at the U.S. Zugeran Base, was arrested for assaulting Chofuku Itosu, a 25-year-old employee of Okinawa Customs in Naha, on Saturday night, the police said.

Itosu, who suffered light injuries to the face, was also arrested at the scene for driving under the influence. Hoffman had also consumed alcohol, the police said.

Hoffman allegedly criticized Itosu’s driving and punched him in the face after watching Itosu drive his car into a pole at a parking lot entrance in Ginowan at around 8 p.m.
