MANILA – A Japanese businessman was killed and his wife seriously wounded Monday evening after they were shot by an unidentified assailant in Batangas Province, 68 km south of Manila, according to local police.
The victim was identified Wednesday as Kazuaki Hirakawa, 56, of Hokkaido.
According to police, Hirakawa and his wife, Petronila Masungsong Hirakawa, 53, were shot after returning to their house in Tanauan City at around 10 p.m.
Petronila had exited the van, which was being driven by Hirakawa, and was about to open the gate when the assailant opened fire, hitting the vehicle six times.
Hirakawa died instantly, police said.
Petronila is listed in critical condition at a local hospital.
Police said two slugs and six empty shells recovered at the scene likely came from M-14 rifles.
There are no suspects yet, they said.
Hirakawa and his wife were engaged in selling surplus equipment, with Petronila running an agency on the side for sending migrant workers abroad, police said. They had been in Batangas for at least three years.
Police said their daughter was not at home at the time of the shooting.
