Foreign-firm workers top 1 million

The number of employees on permanent payrolls at foreign businesses in Japan is estimated at 1 million, or 2.3 percent of the nation’s total number of corporate workers, the Japan External Trade Organization said Tuesday.

The ratio is far below the 5.4 percent in the United States and 5.3 percent in Germany, JETRO said.

According to the semigovernmental organization, 56.4 percent of permanent employees at foreign businesses in Japan are in the manufacturing sector, followed by 13.6 percent in the wholesale, retail and restaurant sector, 13.5 percent in the financial and insurance sector, and 12.7 percent in the services sector.

The estimate is based on a survey in May of 5,113 foreign-affiliated businesses and 1,565 branches of foreign businesses, of which 40.5 percent responded.
