The Japanese ambassador to the Geneva-based Conference on Disarmament, Kuniko Inoguchi, has been elected to serve as chairwoman of a U.N. conference on the illegal trade of small arms and light weapons in July 2003, U.N. officials said Saturday.

The United Nations Conference on the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects unanimously elected Inoguchi on Friday to head the interim conference in New York.

The conference will review the implementation of an action plan adopted in 2001, the officials said.

Member states, international groups and nongovernmental organizations are also expected to exchange views and share experiences in combating illicit trade in small arms and light weapons.
