Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi departed Friday for Moscow to hold talks with Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov.
Kawaguchi, who will stay in Moscow through Tuesday, is scheduled to meet with Ivanov on Saturday. It is her first trip to Russia.
Her visit is intended to lay the groundwork for Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s visit to Russia in January.
On Monday, she will make a courtesy call on President Vladimir Putin and is expected to express her views on how to further promote relations between the two countries.
On Sunday, Kawaguchi is scheduled to tour Moscow. She will attend a meeting on trade and economy between the governments of Japan and Russia on Monday.
