Japan’s oldest giraffe passes away

Japan’s oldest giraffe, a popular attraction with visitors at Rakujuen National Park, died of old age early Friday morning at the park’s zoo in Mishima, Shizuoka Prefecture.

Takako, who was born in Tokyo’s Tama Zoo and was moved to Rakujuen in July 1977, died at the age of 26 years and 11 months.

“I have spent more time with her than with my wife and children,” said a staff member who has been taking care of the giraffe for 25 years. “I am still in shock.”

Takako became the country’s oldest giraffe in late July when Haruko, a giraffe at Tama Zoo, died at the age of 28 years and 2 months.
