Matsushita unveils system that unites TV technologies

OSAKA — Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. said Monday it has developed a system that integrates broadcasting and interactive network service technologies through digital televisions.

Matsushita said it has already received an order for the system from Tokyo Broadcasting System Inc.

The consumer electronics giant said that it hopes to target broadcast stations, communications carriers and content service providers with the product ahead of its launch of full-fledged digital broadcasting services in December.

The new system, called “End to End,” will offer broadcasting and interactive network services. such as Internet shopping exclusively for viewers who have signed contracts with TV stations or content service providers.

One characteristic of the new system is that viewers will be able to easily make videocassette recordings of programs based on program information sent to them. Whenever there are sudden changes in the broadcasting schedule, the timer on the recording function will automatically be updated to the new time.
